"Storm at Mesquite Dunes"

In Death Valley, California, photographers from around the world gather near Stovepipe Wells to capture the inspiring Mesquite Dunes. Rising 680 feet above a dry lake bed, Mesquite Dunes shows off California's tallest sand dunes, and some of the highest dunes in North America.

This photograph, taken at sunrise, captured a brief, quiet moment in the midst of a rare desert storm. The previous night, the high winds had wiped away the remnants of humanity in the dunes, making them pristine once again. And the stormy, filtered light revealed the wind's detailing, flowing over the smooth surface of the ages old sand.
